I have been trying to get to the decision maker to turn around a troubled account because we seem to be stuck with little or no feedback. Comically, I sent an email to the decision maker noting the many things we had in common – hoping to make a connection…seems reasonable, right? Well, I received an email back from the gatekeeper telling me not to contact this person!!!
I guess I didn’t get the result I was looking for but I did get some critical intelligence so let’s look at this positively and see what I did learn:
1. The person did read my email
2. If they were not interested at all I probably would have heard by now
3. My message did get through
Gatekeepers are a fact of life and figuring out how to navigate them is an essential skill. Sometimes you have to take some risk if you are stuck otherwise you are at the mercy of the gatekeeper and you have lost control.
How do you handle these situations?
