Many of us are perpetually looking for the next “job”, the next challenge, the next something… We are all chasing a dream, whatever it may be for each of us.
I wonder how many of us take the time to genuinely assess what they should be looking for as opposed to grabbing the next opportunity that shows up at the door or a taking the convenient out to escape an intolerable situation.
The funny thing is that both sides of the street have the some objective – that being to find the right match for the job – yet the market is very inefficient because of the many other factors that are acting on this marketplace. Yes, there is the perfect intermediary who is supposed to make the perfect match but we all know that’s not a perfect model…so what do we do?
I was reminded of this process last night when I bumped into a former colleague who was in the middle of the “job search dance” with a potential employer. Was this something that made sense or was it convenient because it was one of a limited number of opportunities in a supply-starved market?
Should we take the time to wait it out for the perfect opportunity or is it better to make an educated guess and see where it goes and if it doesn’t work, look for the next stop along the way? I don’t know what the right answer is but I am thinking there must be a more efficient way to execute these market trades, rather than relying on random opportunities, social media, mercenary head hunters, and the list goes on and on…
