This question annoys me so much I have to get on my platform again so please indulge me for a few moments.

I dislike this question so much because it violates so many of the very basic tenets of selling and it’s the opening line!

1. It’s a closed end question – yes/no response

2. You have just given your party an easy out!

3. You have wasted valuable time filling space with nada.

4. You sound like every other junior salesperson out there so immediately send the wrong signal.

5. If the person picked up the phone…

Of course it’s a good time to talk and so what if it isn’t…Start Talking!!!  And have something intelligent to say so you keep the person on the line.

For example:

1. Hi, I was speaking with your colleague who suggested that I call you.

2. We just completed a project for another company in your space and it went fabulously.

3. I am going to be in your city and would like to take you out to lunch.

Add value or don’t bother.  People are busy.  Get to the point.
