I just received another cold call from someone who wanted to sell me a home mortgage.

Ok, I get that and so I allowed him to speak and, once again, I came away so disappointed with the approach it left me wondering if these poor people receive any training at all so they have some hope for success.  Never mind, having raw talent to be really successful, I am just asking for some basic sales skills.

After a couple attempts to ask me some questions about my situation, I tell him I have squashed the idea and the call quickly ends…

Now everyone should know that home owners want to lower their mortgage rates so why didn’t he tell me what the current rates were and see if it made sense to pursue a conversation?  Or why didn’t he ask me if I have an equity line that needed to be fixed?  Ask me something to engage on a level I can quickly get interested in as opposed to lame discovery questions.

Instead, I get closed end, dead-end, irrelevant questions that make me want to hang up.

The good news is – if you are any good you have a bright future in sales because there is a shortage of intelligent and effective salespeople out there.  Period.
