I wanted to share some thoughts and lessons I learned coaching my 7 year old’s soccer team this season that translate to business:
1. Create structure – admittedly, this isn’t easy for 7 year olds but it was amazing to see the impact of teaching the basics and small tactical instruction…like not kicking the ball in across the goal.
2. Stay positive – we pushed a little but always focused on having fun so everyone stayed engaged and wanted to be there and work at getting better.
3. Team work – sure, we had a couple superstars on the team but we stressed passing and working together constantly and everyone contributed. Teams win over superstars every day.
4. Celebrate the successes – fortunately, we won most of the games which was nice but we always celebrated either the things the team did well during the game separately from the outcome so even if we didn’t win we had something to cheer about.
Building a team is a process with many twists and turns. Over time, with a consistent and proper approach, you will have fun and develop a team that will learn and win some games!
Sports, business,…any skill takes lots of dedication and practice so proper coaching is critical to develop your “students”.
Looking forward to next season!
