I was at a hotel this past weekend as part of wonderful road trip with my son Jack. I finished a quick workout so I needed a tall glass of ice water to replace lost liquids….so, I bellied up to the bar and waited patiently for the bar keep to take my order.
Another gent sat down after I did and my active mind started to ponder what would happen when the bartender finally came around to help… Would the bartender ask who was next or just help the first person he/she saw? Well, the latter was the answer so now I wanted to see if the gent would politely defer to me since I was clearly there first.
Much to my disappointment, he did not defer to me; rather continued to get served.
I looked like Danny DeVito above, pensive; I wanted to speak up, but just let it go. Sure, this seems like just meaningless social stuff, but I see it differently. This situation is full of information to learn from. I doubt the bartender or the other guy had a clue what I was thinking. What if this were a business event and these characters were a potential business partner or a client? Would this influence your interest in doing business with these folks, your relationship…?
Social interaction matters, always.
