Learning comes in a variety of ways and one of the greatest learning environments is your family.

I think great leaders do the following things well and all of these traits are part of raising a great family.  So who needs a leadership course, just pay attention at home.  It’s free!

1. Lead by example

If Iwant my kids to be respectful then I have to be respectful to members of my family.  I have to teach my kids how to behave and then I have to walk the talk.

2. Have a clear vision

Kids learn values and what’s important and what it means to be a productive and successful member of society from you.  Reinforce your values daily for them to stick.

3. Celebrate Successes

Your kids love a birthday party or a reward for doing something well.  This will encourage more good things.

4. Focus on the positive

Kids need boundaries but they have less complex minds so keep it simple and provide positive feedback when they listen, play nicely with others, …

5.  Patiently teach with practical examples

If your kid upsets a friend, sit and explain what happened so they understand what not to do the next time.  If something good happens, discuss it and emphasize why it happened so the same behavior can be repeated.

6. Provide freedom to move independently

Provide room for your kids to make their own decisions and mistakes.  Overmanagement doesn’t work as your kids naturally fight for independence.  Give them some room and everyone will be happier.

Listen to your family and they will teach you a lot about leadership and management.  If you do these things in business you will build a great team that will be loyal and follow you with conviction.
